The Research Portfolio
TEACH/LIB

Welcome to the research portfolio development site.  This page is for the instructor.  Students please procede to the student section(s).

This site is designed to help high school students learn both information technology skills as well as information literacy skills during a research project.

Overview of organization of this site.
Student Portfolio Example
  1. Students will learn to use WebConstructs, concept maps on the computer including social networking and internet interaction, to brainstorm their ideas about a project and layout their goals to accomplish it.
  2. Students will use their WebConstructs to begin to track their research information to:organize their ideas, track their bibliographical information, collect and sort information and rethink their goals in context to their progress.
  3. Students will step back from the search process and create a global picture using their collected data and begin to design a pattern or direction that makes sense of, or gives shape to, their project. Students will set up a web-portfolio site on which to upload their concept maps, notes and create their blogs etc (see following sections).
  4. Students will strive to communicate the answer to their research questions through their favourite or the directed media required for the assignment.  Students must keep in mind that the project is to 'say' something to their audience.  The final project will be viewed on a web-portfolio developed by the group or student.
  5. Students will keep a blog on their progress during the project.  They will include their 'appropriate' emotions during the stages, interesting aspects to them personally, as well as advice to themselves or other students about how to be a more effective learner during research in the future.
This site follows "The Research Quest" as developed by the BCTLA and adopted by the BC Min. of Ed.  This site is meant to be used by you and your students on any research project you would like to.  For contributions, corrections, or links please email me.  Credit will be given to you as indicated.  Your contributions are appreciated for the upgrading and development of this site.

Teachers will want to spend more time on this page, Web 2.0, WebConstruct, the Quest, Links, and Assignments pages.  A helpful resource for teachers (not you students!--relax) developing units for search strategies is teacher tap.
Unit Planning Template for The Quest (example in biology assign).  If you like the WebConstruct format or mind mapping you may want to check out Thinkmap Visual which defines words with visual connections as well as giving synonyms.  It does cost but it is particularly helpful with students who struggle with the relationship between words.
